More Info: A generous soul hooked me up with a better IEM and I remixed the whole thing from scratch. (Flynn, Nov 2006). While the next night was certainly a magical one, this show deserves some love and respect as well. With "Tracks" well-represented between Don't Look Back and Rendezvous and Human Touch making its second appearance of the tour, this was clearly a night for the afficianados. Throw in the western swing arrangement of No Surrender and Growin' Up in the encores, and it gets even better.

+ More Info: This is a new take on a previously circulated show from The Tunnel of Love Tour. The source comes from the same recording  used by Doberman for "This Is Not A Dark Ride?" I received this excellent show in a trade many moons ago. I'm not certain if these were ripped directly from silver CDs, but as far as I can tell all the tracks are clean. This new edit combines the introductions with the appropriate songs, except for the intro to BTR. I also split Ain't Got and She's The One into separate tracks. The only remastering done was on the bonus tracks which needed some tweaking. I excluded two bonus songs "Crying" and "New York, New York" from Doberman's version, since the quality was less than desirable. Having just 4 bonus tracks with better quality made for an excellent recording. New artwork was also created using 1988 era photos. So few shows from The Tunnel of Love Express Tour were released and there are so many gems from this show, including the premeire of the famous Jack Wilson song, LONELY TEARDROPS! so this should make for a great one to have in your collection!

+ Backstreets: This seaside bar was the smallest venue in recent memory for Springsteen's two holiday jams on a cold winters' night. While music was piped outside for those who hadn't scored tickets (no more than 500 for each performance), crowds out in the street dwindled as the temperature (and snow!) dropped. Inside, there was plenty of heat. Backed by Bobby Bandiera and his band, complete with Jukes horns (who all pulled this off with very little rehearsal), Springsteen turned in two sets heavy with his own songs, and lighter on the special guest "revue" element of years past. Holiday chestnuts were sprinkled here and there -- "Run, Run Rudolph" at the beginning, and the requisite "Santa Claus" at the end -- but the setlists reflected the roadhouse vibe: rarities like "From Small Things," "Stand on It," "Rendezvous," and of course "Seaside Bar Song"; a blessedly up-to-speed album version of "Further On (Up the Road)"; and deck my halls, the return of the long-lost "All That Heaven Will Allow." Springsteen even came out into the crowd on "Tenth Avenue Freeze-out." He started both shows alone with a three-song acoustic set, breaking out "Bus Stop," "Wild Billy," "For You," "Working on the Highway," and "This Hard Land" over the two concerts. As for additional "friends," Southside Johnny guested in the afternoon performance-- not for "Talk to Me," a song Bruce wrote for the South and sang himself here, but later in the set for "The Fever." No Southside in the late show, but Bruce reprised "The Fever" anyway as an audible, and a guest spot from Patti Scialfa gave the crowd a taste of the RCDS shows, backed by Bobby & Co. on "Tell Him" and an "It Takes Two" duet with Bruce. Also in the late show, Hero of Holiday Shows Past, Max Weinberg took over the drums from "Seaside Bar Song" through the end. Each performance closed with a favorite from the Vote for Change tour (debuted by Bruce at last year's holiday shows), "(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding." Beneficiaries of these concerts (besides the Asbury Park merchants, who had more than 35,000 contest entries filled out in their stores): Interfaith Neigbors, Hope Academy Charter School, Salvation Army, Family & Children's Services, Boys & Girls Club of Monmouth County, Prevention First, Epiphany House, Asbury Park Citizens on Patrol, The Center, Hispanic Affairs & Resource Center, and Save Tillie Inc.

+ More Info: Crystal Cat's "Winterland Night" is the source for the majority of tracks, other than The Promised Land (runs fast), Thunder Road (hiss, runs fast) and Jungleland (hiss, runs fast) which are taken from Great Dane's "Live In The Promised Land". Remaster effects are primarily EQ and compression. The result is more of a "live" feeling, with much improved instrument balance, the drums were previously far too high in the mix.  Each song was painstakingly remastered, with more than ten takes for every track. I hope you enjoy the set, and thanks to Prodigal Son for all his efforts.

+ Brucebase (20.05.1993): Audience tape and also available on a excellent quality soundboard from Downbound Train onwards, but missing the final track. Reportably given to Joe Ely. 33 song set includes guest appearances by Joe Ely on "Settle For Love", and Jerry Lee Lewis on "Great Balls Of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On". Available on CDR "Lets Play That Sun Into The Ground". 90 minutes of video circulate on DVD - "Love Rushed Inside" (brucevideos)

-

More Info: This is an extraordinary 2-disc recording of the last two-thirds of the show. During this part of the show, Bruce pal Joe Ely came on to do "Settle for Love." After the show, he reportedly asked for a copy of it for himself, and Bruce's sound guy handed him a recording of the second half of the show - this tape. In addition to Ely, Jerry Lee Lewis also came on to sing "Great Balls of Fire" and "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." The setlist for the show included these songs from the beginning of the show, which were not available from this source: Seeds, Adam Raised A Cain, This Hard Land, Better Days, Lucky Town, Atlantic City, 57 Channels, Badlands, Satan's Jewel Crown, My Hometown, Leap Of Faith, Man's Job, Roll Of The Dice  and at the very end of the show: It's Alright.

+ Brucebase (05.11.1980): Soundboard recording. One of the finest, most intense shows of the River Tour, perhaps related to the fact that Ronald Reagan had been elected president the day before – which Bruce notes with displeasure during the show. Soundboard tape released on CDs "Heart and Soul" (E Street Records) and "Live In Tempe" (Palace), and most recently remastered on CDR "Love Soul & A Broken Heart" (Ev2). The audio recording of “Badlands” from this show (minus spoken intro) was officially released on the Live 1975-85 box set. This entire show was professionally filmed in its entirety by producer/director Howard Lamden (who also served as Executive Editor). Lamden had previously filmed Pink Floyd and was the Director of Jackson Browne’s early '80s Downtown documentary. Unfortunately the film of this show remains in Springsteen’s vault and is not circulating among collectors. It is likely that the very brief snippets of River Tour pro-shot performance footage seen in the promotional ‘10 Years Burning Down The Road’ advertisement for the Live 1975-85 box set emanates from the Howard Lamden film of this concert - although that is not 100% certain at this point. Many highlights in this show, including perhaps the definitive performance of “Drive All Night”. (…)
